boundary extensions
boundary extensions is a post-photography exhibition that challenges
our perceived relationship to the still photograph and its relationship with
time and memory as it pertains to autobiography and interpersonal
relationships. As Susan Sontag once wrote, “Photographs furnish evidence.
Something we hear about, but doubt, seems proven when we’re shown a
photograph of it. In one version of its utility, the camera record
incriminates.” Yet these records of the passage of time are imperfect and
are forever bound to the restrictions of the tool—one that can never align
with our active recollection of past events. On one hand you have the still
image, on the other your mental imagery of any given occurrence. Here is
where the boundaries are blurred, shifted, warped, and shaped into what
we can consider our working memory, ultimately extending in order to
align with our own emotional and logical needs.
